A polygenic hypothesis for sex determination in the European sea bass - Dicentrarchus labrax ArchiMer
Vandeputte, Marc; Dupont Nivet, M; Chavanne, H; Chatain, Beatrice.
Polygenic sex determination, although suspected in several species, is thought to be evolutionarily unstable and has been proven in very few cases. In the European sea bass, temperature is known to influence the sex ratio. We set up a factorial mating, producing 5.893 individuals from 253 full-sib families, all reared in a single batch to avoid any between-families environmental effects. The proportion of females in the offspring was 18.3%, with a large variation between families. Interpreting sex as a threshold trait, the heritability estimate was 0.62 +/- 0.12. The observed distribution of family sex ratios was in accordance with a polygenic model or with a four-sex-factors system with environmental variance and could not be explained by any genetic...

Allele frequency and selection efficiency in cross populations of Andean x Mesoamerican common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L. Fabales, Fabaceae) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Baldoni,Aisy B.; Ramalho,Magno A. Patto; Abreu,Ângela de Fátima B..
Strategies were investigated for improving efficiency in the use of segregating common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) populations using crosses between the Andean cultivar BRS-Radiante and the Mesoamerican parent cultivar Carioca-MG by developing populations with 12.5%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 87.5% of the allele frequency of one of the parents. For each of the five populations we evaluated for two traits, the number of days to the beginning of flowering and grain yield (g plot-1), in the F2:3 (sown in February 2006) and F2:4 (sown in July 2006) generation progenies using 15 x 15 lattice design experiments, with 44 progenies (n = 220 plants) plus the two parents and three controls being evaluated for each generation. In terms of variability release, the populations...

Allohexaploid pearl millet x elephantgrass population potential for a recurrent selection program PAB
Reis,Matheus Costa dos; Sobrinho,Fausto Souza; Ramalho,Magno Antônio Patto; Ferreira,Daniel Furtado; Ledo,Francisco José Silva; Pereira,Antônio Vander.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the potential of allohexaploid pearl millet x elephantgrass (HGL) population for a recurrent selection program through open-pollinated progenies. Seventy-eight progenies, one representative sample of the population, and two commercial cultivars, Pioneiro and Paraíso, were evaluated in a 9x9 triple lattice design, in two sites. Plant height and dry matter yield were evaluated in three and four cuts, respectively. For plant height, the 17 best progenies were similar to both commercial controls, while for dry matter yield they were higher than 'Paraíso' and lower than 'Pioneiro'. The correlation between progenies and cuts indicated that the fourth cut represents the mean of all cuts, and the possibility of using...

Aplicability of phenotypic and canonic correlations and path coefficients in the selection of oat genotypes Scientia Agricola
Lorencetti,Claudir; Carvalho,Fernando Irajá Félix de; Oliveira,Antônio Costa de; Valério,Igor Pirez; Hartwig,Irineu; Benin,Giovani; Schmidt,Douglas André Mallmann.
Indirect selection through traits of higher heritability and of case measurements can result in larger genetic progress compared to using direct selection. This work was performed with the following objectives: (1) to estimative the phenotypic correlations between individual plant grain yield and agronomic traits of importance in the selection of white oat (Avena sativa L.) genotypes; (2) to identify traits that have the higher direct and indirect effects on grain yield; (3) to determine the intensity of association between primary and secondary components of grain yield; and, (4) to evaluate the consistency of these estimates using five oat genotypes crossed in a diallel format. The number of panicles per plant (NPP) showed to be the trait highest...

Assessment of genetic parameters of degradability in maize grains due to indentation scores Scientia Agricola
Davide,Livia Maria Chamma; Ramalho,Magno Antônio Patto; Figueiredo,Ulisses José de; Souza,João Cândido de.
Maize (Zea mays L.) cultivars with dent grains present higher starch and dry matter ruminal degradability than those with flint grains. This study aimed to assess genetic parameters of degradability in maize grains of different textures and to verify whether there is an association between grain indentation score and ruminal dry matter (RDM) degradability. The evaluated progenies were obtained from the cross between the varieties Cristal (flint) and Cunha (dent), previously selected for grain hardness. Progenies were evaluated for an indentation score using a visual grading scale ranging from 1 (flint) to 5 (dent). To assess the RDM degradability, 5 g were cut into halves, weighed (five grams), stored in bags made of 100% "failet" cloth and incubated for...

Raidan,Fernanda Santos Silva; Tineo,Juan Salvador Andrade; Moraes,Mariana Mamedes de; Escarce,Thiago Campos; Araújo,Andresa Eva Melo de; Gomes,Muller Marques de Carvalho; Ventura,Henrique Torres; Toral,Fabio Luiz Buranelo.
ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate associations among final weight (FW), average daily gain (ADG), scrotal circumference (SC), and visual score (VS) of beef cattle in performance tests on pasture or in feedlots. Genetic parameters for FW, ADG, SC, and VS of young Nellore bulls performance-tested on pasture or in feedlots were evaluated by mixed model. The performance test and final age were considered as fixed effects and additive genetic and residual effects were considered as random effects. Additive genetic and residual variances for final weight and average daily gain were smaller on pasture than in feedlots. There was no difference between genetic and residual variances and heritability for scrotal circumference on pasture or in feedlots. Genetic...

Santos,Alexandra Inês; Ribeiro,Ricardo Pereira; Vargas,Lauro; Mora,Freddy; Alexandre Filho,Luiz; Fornari,Darci Carlos; Oliveira,Sheila Nogueira de.
The objective of this study was to estimate genetic parameters for survival and weight of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), farmed in cages and ponds in Brazil, and to predict genetic gain under different scenarios. Survival was recorded as a binary response (dead or alive), during harvest time in the 2008 grow-out period. Genetic parameters were estimated using a Bayesian mixed linear-threshold animal model via Gibbs sampling. The breeding population consisted of 2,912 individual fish, which were analyzed together with the pedigree of 5,394 fish. The heritabilities estimates, with 95% posterior credible intervals, for tagging weight, harvest weight and survival were 0.17 (0.09-0.27), 0.21 (0.12-0.32) and 0.32 (0.22-0.44), respectively. Credible...

Brachiaria brizantha Stapf access evaluation and estimates of genetic parameters for agronomical characters - DOI: 10.4025/actasciagron.v31i1.6605 Agronomy
Basso, Kelen Cristina; UEM; Resende, Rosangela Maria Simeão; EMBRAPA; Valle, Cacilda Borges do; EMBRAPA; Gonçalves, Manoel Carlos; UFGD; Lempp, Beatriz; UFGD.
Currently, Brachiaria brizantha Stapf is the tropical grass with the largest cultivated area in Brazil, being responsible for a major part of the seed market and for the increase in animal production. There are several superior genotypes available in germplasm banks, collected from the African continent and in need of evaluation. The selection of these genotypes must be based on predicted genotype values of the individuals in function of being perennial plants and of unsexed propagation. The standard procedure for the prediction of genetic values is the individual BLUP (Best Linear Unbiased Predictor), using estimates of variance components achieved by the restricted maximum likelihood (REML) on an individual model. With the aim of selecting B. brizantha...

Components of (co)variance of the days open in Siboney dairy cows Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
González-Peña,D.; Espinoza-Villavicencio,J.L.; Guerra,D.; Palacios,A.; Évora,J.C.; Portales,A..
The records of 63,406 calvings of Siboney dairy cows (5/8 Holstein 3/8 Cuban Zebu) were used to estimate the components of covariance of the days open (DO). Five models were used: of repeatability; univariate; bivariate; of random regression with Legendre polynomials and the parity number as predicting variable; and a model of random regression with Legendre polynomials and heterogeneity of the residual variance. The heritability obtained with the univariate model was 0.09 in the first calving and decreased to 0.05 in the fifth. A higher estimate of heritability (0.12) was obtained with the repeatability model. When the model of random regression with heterogeneity of the residual variance was used, the heritability was higher than the values estimated...

Contemporary groups in the genetic evaluation of Nellore cattle using Bayesian inference PAB
Silva,Delvan Alves da; Silva,Fabyano Fonseca e; Ventura,Henrique Torres; Junqueira,Vinícius Silva; Silva,Alessandra Alves da; Mota,Rodrigo Reis; Lopes,Paulo Sávio.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the criteria for the formation of contemporary groups (CGs) in the genetic evaluation of body weight at weaning in Nellore cattle. A total of 713,474 records from 3,066 herds located in Midwestern and Northern Brazil were used. Data were obtained from the genealogical registry of zebu breeds of the Brazilian association of zebu breeders. Data structures were defined based on the number of standard deviations (SDs) for outlier removal (±2.0, ±2.5, ±3.0, and ±3.5) and on the minimal number of animals per CG (3, 7, and 15). Genetic evaluation was performed with an animal model using Bayesian inference. Data structures with ±3.5 SDs and CG with at least 15 animals presented the highest additive genetic...

Crossing phenotype heritability and candidate gene expression in grafted black-lipped pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera, an animal chimera ArchiMer
Blay, Carole; Planes, Serge; Ky, Chin-long.
Grafting mantle tissue of a donor pearl oyster into the gonad of a recipient oyster results in the formation of a chimera, the pearl sac. The phenotypic variations of this chimera are hypothesized to be the result of interactions between the donor and recipient genomes. In this study, the heritability of phenotypic variation and its association with gene expression were investigated for the first time during P. margaritifera pearl production. Genetic variance was evaluated at different levels, 1) before the graft operation (expression in graft tissue), 2) after grafting (pearl sac tissue expression in chimera) and 3) on the product of the graft (pearl phenotype traits) based on controlled bi-parental crosses and the F1 generation. Donor related genetic...

Designs and model effects definitions in the initial stage of a plant breeding program PAB
Souza,Emanuel Fernando Maia de; Peternelli,Luiz Alexandre; Barbosa,Márcio Henrique Pereira.
The objective of this work was to compare the relative efficiency of initial selection and genetic parameter estimation, using augmented blocks design (ABD), augmented blocks twice replicated design (DABD) and group of randomised block design experiments with common treatments (ERBCT), by simulations, considering fixed effect model and mixed model with regular treatment effects as random. For the simulations, eight different conditions (scenarios) were considered. From the 600 simulations in each scenario, the mean percentage selection coincidence, the Pearsons´s correlation estimates between adjusted means for the fixed effects model, and the heritability estimates for the mixed model were evaluated. DABD and ERBCT were very similar in their comparisons...

Determining the inheritance of agronomic traits in chili pepper Horticultura Brasileira
Bento,Cíntia S; Rodrigues,Rosana; Sudré,Cláudia P; Medeiros,Artur M; Mathias,Vinícius AS; Gonçalves,Leandro SA.
ABSTRACT The Capsicum genus is widely studied in many countries but most of research focuses on C. annuum. Although its importance as potential genetic resource for breeding to disease resistance and fruit quality, studies on genetics and breeding in C. baccatum var. pendulum are still scarce and it still remains as an underexploited crop. This paper aimed to study the inheritance of agronomic characteristics, to estimate the genetic parameters for seven agronomic traits in C. baccatum var. pendulum, using generation mean analysis and to verify the existence of major genes and polygenes with additive and non-additive effects, using the method of maximum likelihood with the aid of Monogen software. The agronomic traits evaluated were: number of fruits per...
